Dr Isobelle Woodruff will begin her Advanced Training in Emergency Medicine in 2022. During her critical care residency at The Alfred she took the opportunity to broaden her exposure to global emergency care as a natural exploration of her interests in public and environmental health. Isobelle completed Capacity Building in Global Emergency Care in 2021.

I am currently working as a critical care resident at The Alfred in Melbourne. I am in my third year post graduation from medical school and have been fortunate enough to complete a wide range of rotations, from obstetrics to neurosurgery. Next year I will begin my training as an Emergency Registrar. My particular interest areas as climate health, universal healthcare and gender equity

The Alfred is based in Melbourne near the CBD and is a quaternary referral centre. We receive patient referrals from all across Victoria, and sometimes interstate/overseas depending on the subspecialty involved. Our health service offers almost every specialty except paediatrics and obstetrics/gynaecology. We have a well-established trauma service and transplant teams, as well as an ICU that offers ECMO. We work closely with regional hubs and Royal Flying Doctors – you can often hear the helicopter landing at all hours of the day, keeping us busy!

I’m really honoured to complete the Capacity Building in Global Emergency Care course on a scholarship from Alfred Emergency Education. I can already see the benefit it will have on my work as a future FACEM.

Learning about structures and frameworks of project development will be useful for all future projects. I really appreciate that capacity, sustainability and cultural sensitivity are woven into the core of the course itself. It’s motivating working collaboratively with colleagues from across the Indo-Pacific – we have so much to share and learn from each other and this is a great platform to do so in a structured way. I’m looking forward to the ongoing collaboration that will hopefully one day be in person.

The Capacity Building in Global Emergency Care Course ran for the first time in 2021 and will be delivered again in 2022. The course offers a diverse and inclusive curriculum and learning group and was very highly reviewed by participants of the inaugural delivery. This semester-long course is eligible for postgraduate credits with Monash University.
