About Us

The Alfred Hospital is one of Australia's oldest and most renowned medical institutions with a history dating back to its founding in 1871. Built in honour of His Royal Highness, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, it remains the longest operating Melbourne hospital at its original location.

The Alfred Hospital Emergency Department was opened on November 6, 1959. Since then, this Department has been providing critical and urgent medical care to the community, and has played a significant role in responding to medical emergencies and disasters on behalf of the state of Victoria. As one of Melbourne's major trauma centers, The Alfred's emergency department is a vital healthcare facility in Australia and a world leader in the provision of emergency and trauma care.

Ten years ago, The Alfred Emergency Department launched a program of academic activities, welcoming healthcare professionals from around the world. The primary objective was to empower emergency clinicians with the requisite knowledge, skills, and confidence essential for providing high-quality care in a diverse range of emergency situations - transcending geographical boundaries and organisational affiliations.

In light of the exponential interest in these academic endeavors, we are delighted to announce the inauguration of The Alfred Emergency Academic Centre in 2023. The Centre is steadfast in its commitment to enhance emergency care not only within Alfred Health, but also on a national and global scale.

The Centre's multifaceted agenda encompasses a myriad of strategic initiatives spanning critical domains of innovation and advancement, cutting-edge research, comprehensive training, and the progressive development of global healthcare systems. These activities not only impact our local and global communities, but also elevate the capabilities and expertise of the emergency care workforce at large, fostering a collective mission to save lives and improve outcomes in emergency medical situations.

The Alfred Emergency Academic Centre remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting and safeguarding the health and well-being of the emergency care workforce, recognising the vital role they play in delivering exceptional care and service in critical and demanding workplace.
