Developed for and taught by Emergency Physicians, The Ultrasound Course will provide you with the skills and resources to undertake ultrasound effectively and with confidence. Experienced faculty will develop your technical and interpretation skills, and enable you to integrate or extend ultrasound use and findings in your practice.


With two workshops available at specific experience levels, The Ultrasound Core Course and The Ultrasound Advanced Course, each course involves a combination of hands-on skills-stations, case-based discussions and lectures.


The Alfred Emergency and Trauma Centre is a major trauma, transplant and ECMO centre; seeing significant numbers of trauma and critically unwell patients. Ultrasound is used in the vast majority of these patients. Our internationally recognised team of experts that comprise The Ultrasound Course faculty draw on this experience to foster your skills and confidence in Ultrasound practice. Faculty

Dr Elissa Kennedy-Smith

Dr. Elissa Kennedy-Smith is an Emergency Physician who works at Sandringham Hospital Emergency Department and The Royal Women’s Hospital in their Early Pregnancy Assessment Service, and is an Affiliate at Monash University. Elissa has an avid interest in all Emergency applications of Point of Care Ultrasound, completing her CCPU in AAA, E-FAST and 1st trimester in 2012, and then going on to attain her Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (Emergency) in October 2017. She enjoys teaching, especially Focused Ultrasound in the ED, has been an instructor on many courses, and is currently the Ultrasound Lead for Emergency Medicine at Alfred Health, as well as being a Committee member for EMUGs Victoria.

Dr Adam Bystrzycki

Dr Adam Bystrzycki is an Emergency Physician at the Alfred Emergency and Trauma Centre with over 20 years experience in the management of major trauma. He is also the former Director of Sandringham Emergency and Deputy Director of Emergency Services for Alfred Health. He has interests in trauma resuscitation, point-of-care ultrasound and critical care echocardiography. He has been involved in educating clinicians in the use of ultrasound for bedside clinical decision support for the last 10 years and has served on the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine’s Ultrasound Subcommittee.

Oriana Tolo

Oriana began her ultrasound career at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne in 1994 where she began developing her teaching skills by teaching the radiology registrars paediatric ultrasound. She moved into general ultrasound in private practice in 1998 at Mayne Health before joining Victoria House Medical Imaging in 2001. From 2001 until 2004 she continued to work at the RCH as tutor sonographer while specialising in MSK ultrasound at Victoria House until 2010. From late 2007 until late 2019, Oriana helped create and co - owned Ultrasound Training Solutions, (now Zedu), an education company teaching point of care ultrasound to physicians of different medical disciplines. She moved back into public hospital radiology as a clinical sonographer from late 2019 until April of 2023, moving from The Northern Hospital, to Eastern Health and finally Monash Health. In April 2023, she embraced the opportunity to join Alfred Health as the Sonographer Educator in the ED and establish a Point of Care program for the Alfred Emergency Department with great enthusiasm. She currently holds this position while keeping her hand in as a clinical sonographer for a private practice.
